Apple's iPad 2, iPhone 5 Will Allow Mobile Payments: Report - Mobile and Wireless - News & Reviews - eWeek.com
Apple's iPad 2 and iPhone 5 will include technology for wireless mobile payments, according to a new report from Bloomberg.

Poor Best
Apple will enable the iPad 2 and iPhone 5 to make wireless purchases, according to an online report.
Richard Doherty, director of consulting firm Envisioneering Group, told Bloomberg Jan. 25 that the next-generation iPad and iPhone will feature payment technology leveraging NFC (near field communication), which allows close-range wireless communication between devices. Apple arch-rival Google has already included NFC capability in its Android 2.3 build, available on smartphones such as the Samsung Nexus S.
Doherty used unnamed “engineers who are working on hardware for the Apple project” as his source, according to paraphrasing in the Bloomberg report, and suggested the payment service would begin “as early as mid-2011.” In theory, the next iPad and iPhone could tap an owner’s bank or credit-card account directly, allowing purchases with a single tap or swipe of the device.
If Apple indeed introduces a mobile-payment service based on NFC, it would have tech-world competition besides Google: Research In Motion co-CEO Jim Balsillie recently suggested that his company was considering NFC technology for its own products.
Apple itself remains predictably closed-lipped about any upcoming products. If it follows past years’ product launch dates, however, the next-generation iPad will make its debut in April, with the new iPhone following in June or July. Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ recent leave of absence, reportedly for health reasons, means that some other executive—most likely COO Tim Cook, who continues to run the company’s day-to-day operations in his boss’s absence—will conduct the actual unveiling of both products.
In any case, rumors are flying fast and furious about the possible new features in Apple’s upcoming products. In a Jan. 12 posting, for example, the blog Boy Genius Report suggested that the next version of the iPad will lack a home button, and instead rely on multi-touch gestures to navigate the home screen. Meanwhile, a small debate has erupted over whether the iPad 2 or even iPad 3 will feature the company’s proprietary high-resolution Retina Display.
“I think the DigiTimes story probably got the resolution right, but the iPad version wrong,” IDC research manager Tom Mainelli reportedly told PC World, referencing a Jan. 20 article in DigiTimes suggesting the iPad 2’s resolution would be 2048 x 1536. “Our sources say Apple has requested that manufacturers begin work on displays with that resolution for iPad 3.”
NFC technology, along with new hardware additions, would possibly help Apple blunt increased competition from other manufacturers intent on breaking into the tablet market. RIM is planning to release a 7-inch tablet, the PlayBook, and companies such as Motorola have Android-based tablets slated to hit store shelves over the next several quarters.
Phone Chargers To Be Standardized In 2011 - HotHardware
Many people have a box or drawer full of old chargers for our old cell phones. Although the charger may function just fine, due to special connection types, we often can't reuse a charger when we switch phones.
After all these years of dealing with different chargers and various connections between phones and other devices, some good news is in store. Soon, all mobile phones could use the same type of charger. In June 2009, 14 of the most prominent mobile phone manufacturers agreed to use a single standard. Although the agreement was made, there's still a lot of background work to be done before consumers enjoy the full benefits of this agreement. Recently, the European Commission sent out details for the standard in preparation for the switch.
The technical specifications for the connection are based on the microUSB connector that many mobile phone manufacturers are already using. You'll find many of your favorite phone brands among the list of manufacturers that have agreed to adopt the standard, including Samsung, Apple, Nokia, and Research in Motion.
Although many of these manufacturers have already begun using the microUSB jack in preparation for the shift, you'll notice one manufacturer on the list that has stuck with its own connection—Apple. Apple's iPod connector is commonly found on a number of accessories. The Commission expects the first devices that have chargers with the precise details of the new standard to appear early next year.
“Now it is time for industry to show its commitment to sell mobile phones for the new charger. The common charger will make life easier for consumers, reduce waste and benefit businesses. It is a true win-win situation," said European Commission Vice-President Antonio Tajani, Commissioner for Industry and Entrepreneurship.

Apple to Add NFC Functionality to iPhone and iPad [REPORT]
Apple will add NFC (near-field communication) capabilities to its next generation iPhone and iPad, claims Richard Doherty, director of the consulting firm Envisioneering Group.
NFC is a form of wireless data transfer over short (up to 4-inch) distances, which could be used to make purchases with a mobile device. If Apple ties the technology with customers’ iTunes account, making purchases might become as easy as swiping your phone over a specifically designed sticker or payment terminal.
According to Doherty, Apple is thinking of starting a mobile payment service as early as mid-2011, integrating it into iTunes and adding the familiar concept of loyalty credits and points into the service. Apple has already designed a prototype payment terminal, Doherty claims, which may be heavily subsidized or even given away to small businesses, jump starting the service.
At first glance, NFC may not seem like a big deal, but making payments simpler and easier makes a world of difference, which Apple already demonstrated with the success of its App Store. Turning the iPhone and the iPad into digital wallets opens up a myriad of possibilities that can potentially mean billions in revenue for Apple.

AppleInsider | Apple iBooks app indicates iPad 2 will quadruple pixels to 2048x1536
Apple iBooks app indicates iPad 2 will quadruple pixels to 2048x1536
Published: 08:00 PM EST
Recent rumors have suggested Apple will give the second generation iPad a much higher resolution screen, although short of the ppi density of the Retina Display of iPhone 4. New graphics discovered within Apple's iBook app suggest this is true.
Last summer, iPhone 4 doubled its screen resolution in both directions (from 320x480 to 640x960), resulting in four times the pixels and an industry-leading pixel per inch density of 326. Apple called the new screen the "Retina Display," because it exceeded the typical resolution of the human eye, making individual dots all but impossible to discern.
The original iPad offered a 1024x768 resolution (at 132 ppi), leading many to guess that the next version might also get a similar Retina Display. However, a 300+ ppi display covering a 9.7 inch screen would require a fantastically high resolution.
Instead of aiming for a specific pixel density, it appears Apple will instead simply quadruple the iPad's native resolution as it did when it introduced iPhone 4, resulting in a very high resolution display with a pixel density of around 260 ppi, short of "Retina" status but still higher than most high end smartphones.
Evenly quadrupling the resolution makes it easy for developers to ship apps that take full advantage of both existing and new screen resolutions by simply including two versions of graphic assets, one labeled (by Apple convention) file.png and and a higher resolution version named file@2x.png.
Apple has reportedly slipped multiple examples of "@2" graphics in versions of its iBooks app, one targeted at iPhone 4 and another at a high resolution future iPad, according to tweets and a separate developer report. This includes "bookmark-ribbon-iPad@2x.png" and a "Wood Tile@2x.png" background image that covers 1536x800, rather than the standard 768x400 image used on iPad.
In order to handle that massive jump in resolution, iPad 2 would likely need a big boost in processing power, particularly its GPU. Recent rumors have suggested that Apple will address that need with a new version of its custom A4 ARM application processor, possibly named either the A5 as suggested by Engadget or A8, as postulated by a source in Hong Kong.
How Much Are You Over-Paying For Your Auto Insurance | How Life Works
How Much Are You Over-Paying For Your Auto Insurance
In good times, it's natural that we pay less attention to our individual expenses. But, in today's uncertain times, regardless of our current situation, everybody needs to save as much money as possible.
When it comes to saving money, the best place to start is with your auto insurance.
Most Americans can point to a similar list of monthly expenses, including mortgage or rent payments, auto expenses, utility bills, food & clothing, and so on. Many of these expenses are fixed and can't be changed, so they offer few opportunities to save any significant amounts of money. Financial experts agree, however, that the one monthly expense where people can, with minimal effort, often find a substantial monthly savings is auto insurance.
Auto insurance is a necessary evil that responsible people know they can't live without. In fact, for many of us, it's a payment we make month-in and month-out, and never see the benefit of. That's OK, because the coverage has to be there if we need it--but, it's also makes it all the more important that we don't overpay.
How to make sure your insurance company is not getting rich off you.
Fortunately, today there are online services that let consumers quickly shop for the best rates from a nationwide selection of auto insurance companies, all competing for your business. You simply enter your requirements, and instantly receive quotes from a wide range of reputable companies.
One of the most comprehensive of these services is AutoInsuranceTips.com. They operate a free website service that will find you the best insurance quotes from a wide network of premium insurers. The site also contains a wealth of reference information that helps you understand how different policies work, and how to save the most money possible.
The fact is that auto insurance rates are constantly changing, and for certain policies, rates have actually dropped significantly in the past 12 months. You can be sure, however, that your insurance company is not going to call you up and let you know their rates have dropped. But, with a minimal amount of time on a service such as AutoInsuranceTips.com you may be able to quickly save hundreds of dollars.
So, if you're into saving money, start by finding

8 Awesome Images of Neptune
The beautiful blue orb of Neptune, named for the Roman god of the sea, is the eighth and farthest planet in our solar system from the sun. This honor used to reside with Pluto until it was demoted from planet status by the International Astronomical Union. Neptune's equator is four times as long as Earth’s. It is 17 times as heavy, though not as dense. We have one moon, while Neptune has 11. And now, thanks to the Voyager 2 spacecraft and the Hubble Space Telescope, we can see Neptune as never before.

Verizon iPhone: 5 reasons to buy, 5 not to
Almost exactly four years from the date Apple announced the original iPhone, the long-rumored Verizon iPhone has become a reality. Now Verizon customers are wondering if they should get it, and AT&T customers are wondering if they should make the switch.
So, here are five reasons you should buy the Verizon iPhone and five reasons you shouldn't:
- Dan Hope, TechNewsDaily Staff Writer
Reasons to buy
1. Verizon Network Is Reliable
This point should be obvious by now given the sheer amount of press and marketing that Verizon has put into it. Verizon's coverage really is more reliable nationwide, even though AT&T has been making strides to catch up. Any AT&T iPhone user who has had five calls drop in a row or who has cursed the lack of bars will instantly be attracted to an iPhone on a more reliable network.
2. Free Mobile Hot Spot
This feature was unexpected, but it may now be one of the most compelling reasons to buy a Verizon iPhone. The 32GB version (not 16GB) will have free mobile hot-spot functionality built in. That means it can function as a Wi-Fi hot-spot for up to five other devices. Buying a separate hot-spot device to tether to a smartphone can cost upwards of $100, and AT&T even charges an extra $30 a month for tethering. In this case, the Verizon iPhone is a deal.
3. Unlimited Data
AT&T infamously capped the data usage rates for iPhone users, giving them a ceiling of 2GB per month. Verizon still has an unlimited data plan, and the Verizon iPhone will be able to use it. iPhone users generally use quite a bit of data, so an unlimited plan can be a huge benefit.
4. New Antenna
Remember the Antennagate fiasco when the iPhone 4 was released? Things have calmed down since, but the new Verizon iPhone has a redesigned CDMA antenna, which could mean the iPhone device itself will have better reception (that's on top of the reliability of the Verizon network).
It's the Same Phone
If you've been craving the iPhone 4's amazing features but didn't want to leave your Verizon account or pay an early termination fee, this is your new Christmas. The Verizon iPhone has all the same features to enjoy: Retina Display, FaceTime video chat, a vast app store and a simple interface.
